ZINC

Zinc is a non-ferrous metal and so is naturally self-protecting. With time it forms a light grey matt patina. The patina is created when the zinc metal reacts with water, oxygen and carbon dioxide to form a layer of hydroxycarbonate. This natural patina protects zinc and reforms or "Self Heals" when scratched.

Zinc in it's natural state is shiny silver in colour, but can be installed with a patina already created. There are suggestions that this can lengthen the lifespan of the material by preventing early accelerated corrosion. The patination speed can vary between six months and five years, depending on the local climate, weather conditions angle of the installation. The more exposure to wetting and drying cycles, the quicker the patina will develop.

COPPER

Copper has been used since ancient times as a durable, corrosion resistant, and weatherproof architectural material. Roofs, flashings, rain gutters, domes, and doors have been made from copper for hundreds or thousands of years. Copper’s architectural use has been expanded in modern times to include interior and exterior wall cladding.

The final patina is a particularly durable layer that is highly resistant to atmospheric corrosion, protecting the metal against further weathering.  Architectural copper and its alloys can also be 'finished' to produce a particular look, and/or colour. Finishes include mechanical surface treatments, chemical colouring, and coatings. Copper has excellent brazing and soldering properties.

The Nordic range of copper from Aurubis come in a wide range of finishes. Copper is much more malleable than zinc or steel and is an ideal roofing and cladding material.

Whilst some treatments slow or prevent the surface from changing colour, it should always be accepted that copper is an extremely active material and it's surface appearance is subject to change through the course of its lifespan.

There are many more options available in copper, please see the Aurubis website for more information:

Terne Coated Steel is thought of as an alternative to lead, as it acquires a similar white powdery surface as it weathers. It also has a low scrap value, so is less likely to be stolen.

It is not as malleable as zinc or copper, but is compatible with most metal roofing methods and systems.
